Rules about election sign placement, sizes, installation and removal dates and other restrictions are enforced by both the Town of Newmarket and York Region. There are two by-laws that anyone running an election campaign needs to be aware of:

York Region's Sign Bylaw 2015-36

Town of Newmarket Election Sign Placement
- Place signs around Town between September 17, 2016 (September 19 at 10:00 a.m. for Regional Roads) and October 19, 2016
- Limit sign dimensions to a maximum area of 16 square feet
- Ensure signs are a minimum of 1.83 metres (6 feet) away from the curb
- Keep signs 0.6 metres (2 feet) away from the edge of sidewalks.
- Remove signs within 72 hours following the day of the election
- Place signs in areas which would obstruct pedestrian or vehicle traffic.
- Erect signs on municipal boulevards, Town parks and land, or at voting locations at any time.
- Post signs on trees, utility poles or traffic lights.
- Put up election signs on private property without permission of the property owner.
Note: Signs that are in contravention of the by-law are subject to a $25 removal fee (deducted from the $250 deposit).
