This is general information for candidates interested in contesting a municipal office. Eligible candidates can run for one of the following offices:

  • Mayor
  • Regional Chair (filed with the Clerk of the Regional Municipality of York)
  • Deputy Mayor and Regional Councillor
  • Local Councillor (representing Wards 1 through 7)
  • York Region District School Board Trustee
  • York Catholic District School Board Trustee
  • Counseil scolaire Viamonde Trustee (filed with the Clerk of the City of Markham)
  • Counseil scolaire catholique Mon Avenir Trustee (filed with the Clerk of the City of Markham)
2018 Nomination Information
Nominations are open as of Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. and close on Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2 p.m. To run as a Member of Council for the 2018 Municipal Election, you must file a nomination paper. Please note the following: 
  • Until you file a nomination paper, you cannot raise or spend money on your campaign
  • Mayor and Councillor candidates must provide at least 25 declaration of endorsements from qualified electors along with their nomination papers

Qualifications for Mayor or Member of Council

In order to run for office in Newmarket, an individual must be:

  • A Canadian citizen; and

  • At least 18 years of age; and 

  • A resident of the Town of Newmarket, or

  • An owner or tenant of land in the Town of Newmarket, or the spouse of the owner or tenant; and

  • Not legally prohibited from voting; and

  • Not disqualified by any legislation from holding office

Who is not eligible to be a council candidate?

The following are not eligible to be elected as a Member of Council, or from holding office as a Member of Council: 

  • A judge of any court 
  • A member of Provincial Legislature, the Federal House of Commons or Senate who has not resigned from their office by the close of nominations 
  • A candidate who failed to file the necessary financial statement in the last municipal election or by-election
Filing a Nomination Form

Nomination forms must be filed in-person as original signatures are required. These forms will be available in April 2018. The acceptance of complete nomination documentation will be taken once an appointment has been made with the Elections Office by emailing elections@newmarket.ca. To file a nomination, you must provide the following: 

  • A completed Nomination Form 
  • At least 25 declaration of endorsements (Mayor and Council candidates only) 
  • Current acceptable identification 
  • Nomination filling fee 

The nomination form must be commissioned by a Notary or Commissioner of Oaths prior to filling it with the Town Clerk. Any documents that are not complete will not be accepted. You may file a nomination form beginning May 1, 2018 to July 27, 2018 ending at 2 p.m.

Withdrawing a Nomination Form

If you no longer wish to run for office in the 2018 Municipal Election, you must: 

  • File the Withdrawal of Nomination Form in-person 
  • Provide identification 
  • File a financial statement by the deadline 

The last day to file a withdrawal is Friday, July 27, 2018 at 2 p.m.
