The CUSP construction crew continues to work on Doug Duncan Drive north of Timothy Street. The contractor expects that the road will be completed by December 1, which means that access to the P3 parking lot (the lot north of the Community Centre) will once again be accessible via Doug Duncan Drive. This also means that effective December 1, Cedar Street with revert to its original use with traffic travelling northbound only.

From pavement to paradise

People are getting excited about the park. Before construction, the new urban park was simply an idea, a set of drawings, a concept. Now, its presence and its potential are unfolding before our very eyes. The removal of the Community Arena in June drastically changed the landscape on the east side of Main Street, and now the park’s construction continues to divulge its potential. As pavement transforms into paradise, a new community space emerges and Newmarket’s premier park takes shape. Soon, we will be able to look back to the pre-park days and think, “Wow, what a difference.” For now, we can witness its development and watch it all come together.

Parking plan for the construction of new downtown park

A trip to Newmarket’s downtown core will quickly tell you that something big is happening. The Community Arena is gone, areas are fenced off and construction crews are busily transforming over eight acres of land behind Main Street and along the Holland River.

So what’s going on? A new urban park is being built that will feature an impressive outdoor rink, dynamic water feature and ample green space. And it’s set to open in the spring of 2011.Exciting, yes, but the question of the day is this: Where will everyone park once the parking lot north of Water Street is transformed into an urban oasis?
