Downtown Newmarket to be Revitalized!
NEWMARKET, Ontario, September 9, 2009 - The Town of Newmarket has secured $4,070,000 in federal and provincial funding for the revitalization of publicly-owned lands in the heart of Newmarket!
The project's design goals are to create flexibility and better define existing connections to Main Street, Fairy Lake, the Holland River, and the Tom Taylor Trail through the creative use of materials, patterns, and topography.
"We have a rare opportunity to transform a large area of land in the downtown core. Our vision is to create a greater link between the downtown core and the pedestrian trail system, "says Mayor Tony Van Bynen. "We really want the people of Newmarket to help create a community space that will honour our historic downtown and become a dynamic social meeting place for Newmarket to celebrate culture and participate in recreational and civic activities. The community's input in the design is integral to creating a central community hub."
Everyone in the community is encouraged to attend the public meetings to be held at the Municipal Offices, 395 Mulock Drive, to learn more about the project and to provide input.
"We believe this will become one of the cornerstones of our community, creating a significant meeting place as people move to and from the existing trails, parks, and the historic downtown," says Ward 5 Councillor Joe Sponga.
This project was awarded by public tender and is being undertaken in collaboration with The Town of Newmarket by Janet Rosenberg + Associates with the assistance of Office for Urbanism Inc., Superkul Inc. Architects, Halsall Associates Limited and the MMM Group. "This project will be an important catalyst in linking Newmarket's heritage with its future and providing exciting opportunities for Newmarket's residents and visitors to experience the Town on a whole new level," says Janet Rosenberg, the founding principal.
