Education
Education
Education is the process of teaching and reinforcing good driving habits in motorists, and discouraging bad ones like speeding and aggressive driving. Education has been proven to be the most effective and cost efficient way to change people's driving habits and improve safety on our roads.
The Town of Newmarket works with York Regional Police (YRP) to run the following programs that educate and encourage safe driving:
1. Road Watch
Road Watch is a joint program between Newmarket and York Regional Police that encourages residents to make a positive change in their neighbourhoods by reporting aggressive and dangerous drivers. The program helps educate, enforce and reinforce good driving habits. The Town of Newmarket is part of the Regional Road Watch Committee.
2. Safe Streets, Nice Neighbourhoods
YRP's Safe Streets, Nice Neighbourhoods initiative works with local communities to find ways to manage and reduce traffic issues. The objective of Safe Streets, Nice Neighbourhoods is to:

3. Town of Newmarket Speed Boards
Newmarket's electronic speed boards raise driver awareness by instantly displaying a vehicle's speed and showing if it is breaking the speed limit in a residential area. The goal of the program is to change motorists behaviour and get them to understand the danger they put themselves, and others in, when speeding. People caught speeding by the mobile monitor will have their license plate recorded and forwarded to YRP. YRP will then send a warning notice to the driver.
4. Traffic & Transportation Management Advisory Committee (TTMAC)
Newmarket's Traffic & Transportation Management Advisory Committee was created to provide feedback to Town Council about community traffic issues and determine ways to solve those issues. TTMAC works with the community to identify problems, conduct research, provide alternatives and implement the most appropriate traffic management solution.
Understanding and following the rules of the road is the most effective way to ensure safety on our streets, in our neighbourhoods and throughout our community!
