Be fireworks conscious this long weekend!                                                          With the May long weekend around the corner, Central York Fire Services (CYFS) reminds residents to be safe with the use, handling and disposal of fireworks.

Normal speed meets every need: National Road Safety Week reminds us to always by Safety Driven                                                                                                          With summer months drawing near, pedestrians and bikers are taking to the streets, sidewalks and trails to enjoy some sunshine. In honour of National Road and Safety Week (May 15-21), the Town is once again running the annual Ease Your Speed campaign in an effort to promote traffic safety and encourage drivers to slow down.

In honour of Emergency Preparedness Week from May 6-12, Central York Fire Services (CYFS) is encouraging families in Aurora and Newmarket to reduce the risks and lessen the impact of a disaster by preparing for the unexpected.

April 29Make-A-Wish Celebrates World Wish Day Granting Local 4-Year-Old's One True Wish to be a Firefighter

Make-A-Wish and Central York Fire Services (CYFS) will grant 4-year-old Owen his one true wish to be a Firefighter. This event takes place on World Wish Day®, a global celebration of wish granting efforts, which encourages individuals and communities around the world to get involved and help make a real difference in the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions.

#NewmarketEarthHour a trending sucess                                                                For the fifth consecutive year, Newmarket residents and businesses successfully reduced electricity use during Earth Hour. Newmarket turned off for an hour on March 31, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. and recorded a 6.9 per cent reduction in electricity consumption, more than double the 2.7 per cent provincial average.

Council approves Old Town Hall design and budget                                                At the Council Meeting on March 5, Newmarket Council approved a design for restoration of the historic Old Town Hall on Botsford Street.

Town welcomes new Director, Legislative Services/Town Clerk                            On Monday, March 5, Newmarket Council appointed Andrew Brouwer as the new Director, Legislative Services/Town Clerk. Under the Corporate Services Commission, the Director leads the Legislative Services Department, which includes municipal clerks services, as well as bylaw and parking enforcement, business and lottery licensing and insurance/risk management services.

When you change your clock, change your battery!                                       Daylight savings time begins on Sunday, March 11, and Central York Fire Services (CYFS) is reminding residents to replace the old batteries and test their smoke alarms when they change their clocks.

February 5-11 is National Burn Awareness Week                                                     Central York Fire Services (CYFS) is asking residents to practice increased burn safety tips in support of National Burn Awareness week, from February 5 to 11, 2012.

Kick-off event for 3rd Annual York Region Multimedia Film Festival                     Join members of the York Region Multimedia Film Festival for the official media launch of the 3rd Annual Multimedia Film Festival of York Region on February 8, 2012.

Town rezones Halton Recycling Ltd. lands                                                          Today the rezoning of lands owned by Halton Recycling Ltd. on Harry Walker Parkway south, north of Mulock Drive, has come into effect. This will allow for Mixed Employment uses such as office, light manufacturing, hotel, and some retail uses for this property. The rezoned lands include the existing Halton Recycling composting plant, which will be developed for other uses of higher value.

In case of emergency Newmarket is prepared. A refined Emergency Response Plan was adopted by Council this past Monday. The new plan will ensure the safety and well-being of the community and ensure that Newmarket is prepared to respond in the event of an emergency.

The Town of Newmarket is seeking community input on its first ever cultural mapping project. To find out what the community considers to be Newmarket's most important cultural resources, the Town is currently conducting an online survey and residents are encouraged to provide their feedback on the cultural assets Newmarket has to offer.

Town of Newmarket takes a stand on racist graffiti
Newmarket residents have come forward to take a stand for their community and to offer their support after damage to personal property containing racist graffiti was found at a Newmarket home on December 25, 2011.
