Town of Newmarket introduces
Outdoor Sport Field Hotline

NEWMARKET, Ontario, September 23, 2009 – The Town of Newmarket now has an Outdoor Sport Field Hotline to monitor the status of Town permitted fields. Residents can call 1-877-PLAY936 (1-877-752-9936) to receive frequent updates on activity cancellations at outdoor facilities due to inclement weather.

“The Outdoor Sport Field Hotline is a convenient way for users of the Town’s sports fields to determine whether the facility is safe for use,” says Newmarket Mayor Tony Van Bynen. “Outdoor facility closures are mostly a result of inclement weather. Because we cannot control the weather conditions we want to make sure that we provide our residents with timely updates.”

Field and diamond permit holders and users are encouraged to call the hotline during periods of inclement weather for information about field conditions and closures. Up to date information on the status of fields and diamonds is available by checking the Outdoor Sport Field Hotline after 2 p.m. on weekdays and throughout the day on weekends.

The decision to order short-term closure of fields and cancellation of permitted play is made when the fields are considered unsafe and when there is potential for long term damage that could affect other permitted uses.

“Using sports fields and diamonds in inclement weather can be dangerous to users and can also cause damage to the facility,” says Ward 7 Councillor Chris Emanuel. “This hotline will help users stay safe, and will also help maintain the condition of the facilities.”
