An Urban Shoulder is a space that consists of a white line painted anywhere from 1.0 to 2.5 metres away from a curb to create a visual “road diet”. This urban shoulder is not an alternative to a dedicated cycling facility, but a traffic-calming measure to slow down vehicular traffic on the road.
Urban Shoulder does not affect the existing parking restrictions and on-street parking. All parking restrictions remain as they were before the installation of Urban Shoulders, and any on-street parking that was previously allowed continues to be permitted after the lines are painted.
The Urban shoulder Program is the Town of Newmarket’s Speed Management Pilot Program and
seven(7) pilot locations were added to the Town in 2022.
