Starting Monday, September 14th, 2020 the Magna Pool will be open. We are excited to welcome everyone back to the Magna Centre pool for lane swim, public swim, and aquafit classes. Capacity is limited and residents are required to reserve their swim time online prior to visiting the pool at play.newmarket.ca.

The safety of staff and residents is our top priority. New procedures and cleaning protocols will be in effect. At this time, there will be reduced
programming and a limited number of participants allowed to use the facility at a time to ensure that physical distancing can be maintained.
There will be a daily admission fee per swim to be paid online prior to arrival during pre-registration.

Each swim consists of a 45 minute swim, with 30 minutes for cleaning/sanitation between each session. All bathers must the exit pool and deck area at the end of each swim session.

What You Need to Know:

  • There will be a daily admission fee per swim to be paid online prior to arrival. Pre-purchased 10/20/30/100x Membership Passes/ Swim Visits are not available to be used or purchased at this time.
  • Swim times are 45 minutes and must be pre-booked online.
  • Washrooms will be available for use on a rotational basis to allow for increased cleaning. Washrooms will not be available for gender specific use and only one participant will be permitted to enter at a time.
  • There will be directional markers/signage to guide you through the facility and pool area.
  • High touch points on the pool deck will be sanitized in between each swim.
  • Equipment provided by the Town will be limited at this time to safety equipment such as lifejackets.
  • Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment such as goggles, filled water bottle, flutterboards, pull buoys, pool toys, etc. Snorkels are not permitted and the use of personal equipment is under the discretion of the lifeguards.
  • Change rooms and lockers will not be available. You should arrive showered and dressed for your swim. Please leave valuables at home and use a designated spot on the pool deck for items you bring to the pool.

  • Water features and jets will not be available until further notice.
  • The learning pool will be unavailable during lane swims and aquafit. It will be available during public swim.

What to Expect:
  • Please arrive no more than 10 minutes prior to your scheduled swim to sign in. 5 minutes prior to the start of the activity, you will be allowed access to the pool deck.
  • Arrive on time as access to the facility will be restricted before and after each scheduled swim time.
  • You will be required to line up in the designated area outside the Magna Centre East entrance. 
  • You will be greeted by a staff member and you will be asked to complete a health screening questionnaire for COVID-19 symptoms.
  • All users are required to use the provided hand sanitizer and wear a mask while in the facility, all common areas, and the pool deck area. Masks are to be taken off and left with your belongings prior to entering the water.
  • Physical distancing of 2 metres is required throughout the facility and within the pool
  • Capacities for each swim differ and will be continuously evaluated
  • Lane swim: 1 person per lane
  • Public swim: 30 people – each participant/group is required to maintain their distance from other participants/groups
  • Aquafit: 25 people – each participants is required to maintain their distance from other participants
  • Exiting procedures will be in an orderly fashion with Deck Supervisors available to direct traffic flow. Please be mindful of other participants as you exit the pool.
  • All swimmers must exit the pool deck immediately after collecting their belongings from their designated spot on the pool deck.
Pre-Registration Guidelines:

To ensure everyone gets an opportunity to use the pool, here are some guidelines:

  • All participants must pre-register and pay online. For families/groups, each individual must be registered for the swim. There will be no in person drop ins available at this time.
  • You are permitted to book one time slot per swim per day. For example, you can register for a lane swim time as well as a public swim time each day.
  • If you register for two consecutive programs, you will be required to leave the facility and re-enter for your scheduled time slot.
  • If you are 10 minutes or later for your time slot, you will not be able to access the pool and will have to book another time to swim.
  • At the end of the swim you must leave the facility regardless of the time you arrived.
  • Swim sessions are non-refundable and non-transferable. Should the Town of Newmarket cancel classes and/or swim sessions beyond the control of our participants, a credit will be processed to your account to use for a future swim session and/or program/service offered by the Town.
Refunds, No shows:
  • If you cannot make your scheduled time up to 24 hours in advance you can log back into your account and withdraw yourself from your scheduled swim session.  A credit will be applied to your account or you can rebook another available swim.
  • Day of cancellations, please notify us by emailing swimming@newmarket.ca  A credit will be applied to your account.
  • Cancellations received with less than 1 hour notice will be considered late and will be considered a no show.
  • Refunds will not be issued for "no shows".
How We’re Keeping You Safe:
  • Prior to reopening, the pool area has gone through a deep clean and disinfecting.
  • High traffic surface areas will be disinfected a minimum of twice per day.
  • Floors are disinfected daily
  • The pool and deck area will be cleared and all high touch surfaces will be disinfected in between each scheduled swim.
  • Hand sanitizing stations will be made available at the entrance and accessible throughout the facility.
  • Lifeguards will be required to wear personal protective equipment while actively watching the pool and while cleaning or completing other duties.
  • Protective barriers have been installed at designated locations where staff and participants meet, including the front desk, and where possible.
  • Signage to direct the flow of traffic and encourage physical distancing will be posted
  • A Deck Supervisor will be available on the pool deck to direct traffic, assist with any questions or participant needs, and supervise the lifeguards
  • Any equipment provided for safety purposes will be sanitized by lifeguards between swims.
Admissions Standards:
We have new safety measures in addition to our existing admission standards.
  • Each parent/guardian may bring a maximum of 4 children between the ages of 6 and 9 or a maximum of 2 children under 6 years of age.
  • Participants between the ages of 10-15 years must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who is a minimum of 16 years of age. The parent/guardian for those ages 10-15 years must remain in the pool enclosure to supervise, be available for any first aid incidents, and to ensure the physical distancing of 2 metres/6 feet is maintained throughout the swim (with the exception of those who are within your group). There is no maximum number of children per guardian for this age group.
  • Changes to our admissions guidelines are due to adaptations to first aid response, which encourage self-treatment or treatment from a family member/guardian for minor emergencies. These changes are meant to decrease contact between staff and the public and to promote physical distancing.
  • Participants between the ages of 10-15 years must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who is a minimum of 16 years of age. The parent/guardian for those ages 10-15 years must remain in the pool enclosure (meaning on the pool deck, and as a paying participant as your presence counts toward COVID participant restrictions)  to supervise, be available for any first aid incidents, and to ensure the physical distancing of 2 metres/6 feet is maintained throughout the swim (with the exception of those who are within your group). There is no maximum number of children per guardian for this age group.

Facility Swim Test:
To ensure the safety of all participants, children (6-9 years) who wish to swim unaccompanied in the pool must complete the facility swim test:
  • Proficiently swim 2 widths un-aided (i.e. no lifejacket, water wings, etc.) of the largest pool followed immediately by 1 minute of treading water (head and ears remaining above the surface at all times).
  • Upon completing the facility swim test, the child will receive a green wristband.
  • Facility swim tests are conducted during public swim times and results are recorded on your family account
Aquafit:

  • Reserving your space is required online at play.newmarket.ca
  • There will be a daily admission fee of $5 per aqua fit class to be paid online prior to arrival. Pre-purchased 10/20/30/100x Membership passes/ Swim Visits are not available to be used or purchased at this time.
  • All participants will be required to physically distance in the pool and capacities have been reduced to allow for this.
  • Participants are required to line up outside the Magna Centre East Entrance, in the designated waiting area, prior to the class start time. Signage will indicate the physical distancing requirements. 
  • 10 minutes prior to your class time, you will be invited to complete a pre-screening questionnaire with a Recreation staff at the entrance. Once checked in you will be permitted to wait safely and physically distanced in a designated waiting area.
  • All users are required to use the provided hand sanitizer and wear a mask while in the facility, all common areas, and the pool deck area. Masks are to be taken off and left with your belongings prior to entering the water.
  • Classes are modified where possible to distancing and safe equipment use
  • A phased in gradual approach will be made with equipment use
  • Equipment will be cleaned, disinfected and set up in advance to ensure physical distancing.
  • Participants will leave their equipment on the pool deck and fitness/aquatics staff will clean, disinfect and put it away.
  • There will be no sharing of equipment at this time.
  • We encourage you to bring your own aquafit belt/pool noodle.
  • Exiting procedures will be in an orderly fashion with Deck Supervisors available to direct traffic flow.
Swimming Lessons and Aquatic Leadership
For fall 2020 we are focusing on rolling out drop in programs safely. For winter 2021, registered programs such as swimming lessons and aquatic leadership courses will be rolled out with reduced capacities and adapted formats based on best practices and public health requirements.

General Pool FAQ's

How do I attend a swim program.  Can I just show up?

All participants must pre-register and pay online to reserve a spot. For families/groups, each individual must be registered for the swim. There will be no in person drop ins available at this time.

 

Will change rooms and showers be available for my pool visit?

Change rooms and showers will not be available at this time. You should arrive showered and dressed for your swim. Please leave valuables at home and use a designated spot on the pool deck for items you bring to the pool.

 

How will you ensure my safety during my swim program?

Capacities are reduced and spots must be reserved.  A health screening will be required prior to entering the pool. Physical distancing will be mandatory and regular cleaning and sanitization of high touch points and equipment will be performed regularly.

Can I use my pre-purchased Membership Pass Swim Visits?

  • There will be a daily admission fee per swim to be paid online prior to arrival. Pre-purchased 10/20/30/100x punch passes are not available to be used or purchased at this time.
  • Customers who wish to obtain a credit for Membership Pass can do so by emailing info@newmarket.ca or calling 905-953-5303. This will allow customers to use their credit on their account for online reservations.


Do I have to wear a mask?

The Town of Newmarket in collaboration with York Region Public Health, continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation. Users of the Town of Newmarket facilities, buildings and/or amenities are reminded that the facilities, buildings and/or amenities are open for use at your own risk. An inherent risk of exposure to communicable diseases including COVID-19 exists in any public space where people are present. By visiting any Town of Newmarket facility, building and/or amenity you voluntarily assume all risks including any risk of injury, loss, damage, and possible exposure to a communicable disease including COVID-19. We remind you to follow the COVID-19 precautionary guidelines being recommended by various Canadian health authorities including the York Region Public Health Unit, Ontario Health and Public Health Agency of Canada
