In response to the Provincial news release Monday, June 7, 2021 and effective Friday, June 11 at 12:01 a.m. Ontario will be entering Step 1 of the COVID19 Reopening Plan.  As a result, some Town amenities and programs will be re-opening and operational in accordance with Step 1. Please note, All Town of Newmarket indoor buildings, facilities and indoor, in-person programs remain closed/cancelled as of the April 8, 2021 Lockdown notice, as they are not part of Step 1 of the Province’s Reopening Plan.  

In accordance with all health and safety regulations as outlined by the Province and York Region Public Health, Step 1 permits the operation of summer camps and outdoor pools.  This does not affect or cancel any VIRTUAL programs currently running.  Check back often for registration dates and be sure to follow us on Social Media @TownofNewmarket.

Gorman Outdoor Pool

We are excited to welcome everyone back to the Gorman Outdoor Pool for public swim, parent & tot swim, senior swim, inclusion swim and aqua fitness classes. Capacity is limited and residents are required to reserve their swim time online prior to visiting the pool at play.newmarket.ca

The safety of staff and residents is our top priority. New procedures and cleaning protocols will be in effect. At this time, there will be reduced programming and a limited number of participants allowed to use the facility at a time to ensure that physical distancing can be maintained. There will be a daily admission fee per swim to be paid online prior to arrival during pre-registration.

Each program is scheduled for 45 minutes, with 15 minutes for cleaning/sanitation between each session. All bathers must exit the pool and deck area at the end of each swim session.


Pool / Swimming Pay as you Go Fees:  

  • Children up to 4 years old $1.25/ per swim
  • Members 5 years old and up $3/per swim
  • Aqua Fitness $5/class.

What You Need to Know:

  • There will be a daily admission fee per swim to be paid online prior to arrival.
  • Pre-purchased 10/20/30/100x punch passes are not available to be used or purchased at this time.
  • Fitness Centre Members are not able to register at no charge at this time as Fitness Centre Memberships continue to be on hold.
  • Swim times are 45 minutes and must be pre-booked online.
  • Washrooms will be available for use in gender-specific changerooms.
  • There will be directional markers/signage to guide you through the facility and pool area.
  • High touch points on the pool deck will be sanitized regularly.
  • Equipment provided by the Town will be limited at this time to safety equipment such as lifejackets.
  • Participants are encouraged to bring their own equipment such as goggles, filled water bottle, flutterboards, pull buoys, pool toys, etc.
  • All participants are required to arrive changed and ready to swim
  • Lockers will not be available. Please leave valuables at home and use a designated spot on the pool deck for items you bring to the pool.
  • Limited access to changerooms will be provided only after the scheduled swim. There will be no access to showers, hair dryers, or outlets.

Amenities Temporarily on Pause:

  • Lockers will not be available. Please leave valuables at home and use a designated spot on the pool deck for items you bring to the pool.
  • There is no access to showers, hairdryers, or outlets in the changerooms.

What to Expect:

  • Please arrive no more than 10 minutes prior to your scheduled swim to wait outside. 5 minutes prior to the start of the activity, you will be allowed access to the pool deck.
  • Arrive on time as access to the facility will be restricted before and after each scheduled swim time.
  • You will be required to line up in the designated area outside the main entrance of Gorman Outdoor Pool.
  • A staff member will greet you and you will be asked to complete a health-screening questionnaire for COVID-19 symptoms.
  • The Town of Newmarket now has COVID-19 screening for the public and contractors at all municipal facilities. Click on the following link or scan the QR code at the Gorman Pool entrance to access the Public Health Screening.
  • All users are required to use the provided hand sanitizer and wear a mask while in the facility, all common areas, and the pool deck area. Masks are to be taken off and left with your belongings prior to entering the water.
  • Physical distancing of 2 metres is required throughout the facility and within the pool, except for aqua fitness classes that require 3 metres distance.
  • Capacities are reduced at this time and differ for the type of swim. Our capacities are continuously monitored and follow provincial guidelines. All participants/groups are required to maintain their distance from others while participating in drop-in programming.
  • Exiting procedures will be in an orderly fashion through the deck gate with Deck Supervisors available to direct traffic flow. Please be mindful of other participants as you exit the pool.

Changeroom Use:
  • All participants are required to arrive changed and ready to swim.
  • Lockers will not be available. Please leave valuables at home and use a designated spot on the pool deck for items you bring to the pool.
  • Limited access to gender-specific changerooms will be provided only for 10 minutes after the scheduled swim. There will be no access to showers, hair dryers, or outlets.
  • Masks/face coverings must be worn inside the changerooms at all times.
  • Depending on the number of participants, you may need to wait to access the changerooms. You will be required to wait on the pool deck with your belongings as directed by the lifeguards.
  • Participants are encouraged to leave the pool enclosure immediately after their scheduled swim, and to shower and change at home.
  • The changerooms will be cleaned/sanitized throughout each day. Please use the changerooms at your own risk. 

Pre-Registration Guidelines:

To ensure everyone gets an opportunity to use the pool, here are some guidelines:

  •  All participants must pre-register and pay online. For families/groups, each individual must be registered for the swim. There will be no in person drop-ins available at this time.
  • All timeslots will be available for booking at 8 a.m. the day prior to when you wish to swim at play.newmarket.ca 
  • You are permitted to book one time slot per day.
  • If you are 10 minutes or later for your time slot, you will not be able to access the pool and will have to book another time to swim.
  • At the end of the swim you must leave the facility regardless of the time you arrived.
  • Swim sessions are non-refundable and non-transferable. Should the Town of Newmarket cancel classes and/or swim sessions beyond the control of our participants, a credit will be processed to your account to use for a future swim session and/or program/service offered by the Town.
  • Should inclement weather cause the closure of the outdoor pool, participants impacted by the closure will be notified. Please ensure your registration account contact information is up to date.

Refunds, No shows:

How do I cancel my session?

  • If you cannot make your scheduled time, you can log in to your account and withdraw yourself the day prior to your registered session/class/program. A credit will be applied to your account or you can rebook another available time slot.
  • For cancellations for any pool programs: on the day of your session, please notify us by emailing info@newmarket.ca with CANCEL in the subject line or call Customer Service at 905-953-5303. A credit will be applied to your account.

No Show Policy

  • If you fail to attend your reservation and do not cancel within 2 hours of the start time, the policy will be as follows:
  • 1st No Show – An email will be sent to your attention to advise you of our cancellation process and no show policy.
  • 2nd No Show – Your account will be frozen and reservations will be not permitted for one (1) week.

How We’re Keeping You Safe:

  • Prior to reopening, the pool area has gone through a deep clean and disinfecting.
  • High traffic surface areas will be disinfected a minimum of twice per day.
  • Floors are disinfected daily
  • The pool and deck area will be cleared and all high touch surfaces will be disinfected in between each scheduled swim.
  • Hand sanitizing stations will be made available at the entrance and accessible throughout the facility.
  • Lifeguards will be required to wear personal protective equipment while actively watching the pool and while cleaning or completing other duties.
  • Protective barriers have been installed at designated locations where staff and participants meet, including the front desk, and where possible.
  • Signage to direct the flow of traffic and encourage physical distancing will be posted
  • A Deck Supervisor will be available on the pool deck to direct traffic, assist with any questions or participant needs, and supervise the lifeguards
  • Any equipment provided for safety purposes will be sanitized by lifeguards between swims.

Admissions Standards:

  • In addition to our existing admission standards, it is recommended that participants between the ages of 10-15 years be accompanied by a parent/guardian who is a minimum of 16 years of age. The parent/guardian for those aged 10-15 years would pay admission and remain in the pool enclosure to supervise, be available for any first aid incidents, and to ensure the physical distancing of 2 meters/6 feet is maintained throughout the swim (with the exception of those who are within your group). There is no maximum number of children per guardian for this age group. This recommendation is meant to decrease contact between staff and the public while promoting safe distancing in the event of an emergency.

Facility Swim Test:

To ensure the safety of all participants, children (6-9 years) who wish to swim unaccompanied in the pool must complete the facility swim test:

  • Proficiently swim 2 widths un-aided (i.e. no lifejacket, water wings, etc.) of the pool followed immediately by 1 minute of treading water (head and ears remaining above the surface at all times).
  • Upon completing the facility swim test, the child will receive a green wristband.
  • Facility swim tests are conducted during public swim times and results are recorded on your registration account.

Aqua Fitness
  • Reserving for your space is required online at play.newmarket.ca
  • There will be a daily admission fee per swim to be paid online prior to arrival. Pre-purchased 10/20/30/100x punch passes are not available to be used or purchased at this time.
  • Fitness Centre Members are not able to register at no charge at this time as Fitness Centre Memberships continue to be on hold.
  • All participants will be required to physically distance in the pool and capacities have been reduced to allow for this.
  • Participants are required to line up outside the Gorman Pool Entrance prior to the class start time. Signage will indicate the physical distancing requirements. 
  • Five minutes prior to the class start time, participants will be invited inside to check-in.
  • All users are required to use the provided hand sanitizer and wear a mask while in the facility, all common areas, and the pool deck area. Masks are to be taken off and left with your belongings prior to entering the water.
  • Classes are modified where possible for distancing and safe equipment use
  • A phased in gradual approach will be made with equipment use
  • Equipment will be cleaned, disinfected and set up in advance to ensure physical distancing.
  • Participants will leave their equipment on the pool deck and fitness/aquatics staff will clean, disinfect and put it away.
  • There will be no sharing of equipment at this time.
  • Exiting procedures will be in an orderly fashion with Deck Supervisors available to direct traffic flow.



Swimming Lessons
We are continuing to focus on rolling out our drop-in and leadership programs safely. The feasibility of modified swimming lessons will be considered in the future based on best practices and public health requirements.

Aquatic Leadership

The Town of Newmarket is excited to once again offer Aquatic Leadership courses in a blended learning format. All programs will be pre-registered. These courses are considered an essential service under health and safety training and will follow provincial guidelines, as well as the guidelines from the Lifesaving Society's roadmap to reopen. Registered participants will be sent an email a few days prior to the course start date to notify participants of the online course times and to remind them about safe practices – Please ensure contact information is up to date.

Safe Practices

  • Physical distancing of at least 2 metres must be maintained while inside the facility and in the pool, unless there is an evaluation item where distancing is not feasible.
  • Capacities for courses have been limited to allow for physical distancing.
  • Participants and instructors will be required to wear a face mask or covering while entering the facility, during screening, and during any dryland portions of their course
  • Before entering the water, participants will be asked to remove their masks/coverings
  • Participants will be divided into "bubble buddies" for the duration of the course. This will minimize the interactions between participants.
  • A Bubble Buddy is one or two other candidates in the same course who you will be working with exclusively. If you would like to request a candidate to work with, please email swimming@newmarket.ca prior to the first day of your course.
  • Any equipment used will be assigned to the participants for the duration of their course and if it is re-usable, sanitized between programs.
  • High-touch surfaces will be cleaned frequently

Participant Screening

  • Participants will be required to fill out the Public Health Screening prior to the start of each in-person session. They will show the Staff Health Screener the green check mark to be allowed entry into the facility.
  • If a participant has not completed the screening prior to coming to the facility, they will be asked to scan the QR code at the entrance and will fill out the form online before proceeding.
  • If a participant is feeling unwell, they are asked to not attend their course and notify the Town or the Instructor at swimming@nemarket.ca.

Changeroom Use

  • Changerooms will be available for use 10 minutes after the end of in-water sessions.
  • Lockers are not available at this time so please leave valuables at home and use the designated spot on the pool deck for items you bring.

General Pool FAQ's

How do I attend a swim program. Can I just show up?

  • All participants must pre-register and pay online to reserve a spot. For families/groups, each individual must be registered for the swim. There will be no in person drop-ins available at this time. Registration is not required for Town of Newmarket splash pads. Will change rooms and showers be available for my pool visit?

  • All participants are required to arrive changed and ready to swim.
  • Lockers will not be available. Please leave valuables at home and use a designated spot on the pool deck for items you bring to the pool. The Town of Newmarket is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
  • Limited changeroom access will be provided for changing only AFTER each scheduled swim. There will be no access to showers, hair dryers, or outlets.

How will you ensure my safety during my swim program?

Capacities are reduced and spots must be reserved.  A health screening will be required prior to entering the pool. Physical distancing will be mandatory and regular cleaning and sanitization of high touch points and equipment will be performed regularly.
