This is general information for candidates to learn about the Town’s enforcement practices for election signs during the 2018 Town of Newmarket Municipal Election.

Election Sign Enforcement
The Town of Newmarket will be conducting election sign inspections regularly as needed. Town staff will also be conducting weekend enforcement throughout the election. If sign placement is causing a health and safety issue, enforcement will be immediate.

We will notify each candidate once by email regarding placement of signs in contradiction of Regional and Municipal sign by-laws prior to initial removal. Following this, all illegally placed signs will be removed without any notification and fees will apply.

During the week before the election there will be no notification provided to candidates regarding removal of illegally placed signs regardless of whether they have had any prior violations or not.

Election Sign Complaints
Complaints concerning election signs should be directed through the Town of Newmarket's Customer Service department by calling 905-895-5193, Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. After-hour calls will be sent to an answering service. Complaints concerning stolen or defaced election signs should be directed to the York Regional Police non-emergency line at 1-866-876-5423.

Election Sign Rules

Election sign placement, sizes, installation and removal dates and other restrictions are enforced by both the Town of Newmarket and York Region. There are two different by-laws that anyone running an election campaign should be aware of:

  • Town of Newmarket Election Sign By-law
  • York Region Sign By-law 2015-36

The Town of Newmarket is responsible for election signs placed on municipal roads whereas York Region enforces election sign restrictions on all Regional intersections. For detailed information on restrictions on Regional roads, contact the Regional Municipality of York or visit york.ca.
