Family of Coyotes showing territorial behavior in the Old Main Street and Bexhill Road Area
Created: Friday, July 14, 2023
Newmarket’s Animal Services team is aware of a family of coyotes with pups in the Old Main Street and Bexhill Road Area who have been showing territorial behavior.
Our Animal Services Officers are patrolling the neighbourhood conducting humane hazing techniques, such as making loud noises and large movements to deter the coyotes from the area.
If you see our Animal Services Officers, please give them space when they are conducting this work as this means the coyotes are nearby. If possible, try to avoid the area particularly for walking dogs.
Do not approach or touch a coyote or turn your back or run from them.
If approached by a coyote, pick-up small children or pets. Back away while remaining calm, stand tall, wave your hands and make lots of noise.
Educate your children to not approach or harass any wild animals.
Always keep pets on a short leash (6ft. or less).
Don’t leave small pets unattended near forested areas, including your backyard
If the coyote poses an immediate and serious threat, call 9-1-1.
Report coyote interactions to Animal Services at 905-895-5193 and press 3 if calling after-hours.
The Town is working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and other wildlife partners to humanely address this concern.
