Free overnight parking available in select municipal lots by permit

    Created: Thursday, October 26, 2023

Winter season parking restrictions are in effect in Newmarket from November 1, 2023 until April 15, 2024 to allow for appropriate snow removal during winter months. During this time, vehicles cannot be parked on the street overnight (between 2 a.m. to 6 a.m.). To provide alternative parking options while winter parking restrictions are in effect, residents can park in select municipal lots overnight between the hours of 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. with a free permit through the Off-Street Parking Program.

All residents are eligible to apply for and obtain a temporary parking permit through the Town's online parking portal at parking.newmarket.ca by providing their vehicle information.

With the free permit, drivers can park in designated spaces overnight from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following day. By 7 a.m. vehicles must be moved to give way to snow clearing of the lot, and to open the space for daytime use.

Residents will be permitted to park in designated spots in one of six parking lots. Click on the maps for more information on where to park within each lot.

All permits will be issued electronically and without the need to print or place a hard copy permit within vehicles. Once registered, residents will receive important details about the rules and regulations for parking within Town-owned lots. There are designated paces within each lot with sings and markings the spaces. Selected spaces are far from the building to minimize the impact on patrons using the facilities. These spaces are available for daytime use.

Residents should consider this option when they have overnight guests, are hosting parties and need a safe space for guests to leave their vehicle overnight if they are having a few drinks, or to leave a cehicle downtown after a special dinner on Main Street.

    Background

The Off-Street Parking Program was launched as a pilot program in 2020 to meet the challenge of more cars at each residence during the pandemic and has now become a permanent option each winter to offer continued flexibility to residents. Since the pilot program was launched in December 2020, over 900 permits have been issued.

Winter parking restrictions are in effect from November 1 to April 15 each year, during which time vehicles are required to be off the roadway overnight to provide a clear area for snow removal and to improve overall visibility. Regardless of whether or not there is snow on the ground, parking enforcement will be in effect. The fine for parking on street/roadway between the hours of 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. is $100. The Town encourages residents to take advantage of the extra parking spaces in Municipal lots through the Off-Street Parking Program when hosting friends and family during the holiday season and throughout the winter.
