Metrolinx will be conducting utility relocation work downtown near Timothy Street and Doug Duncan Drive as part of the GO Train Expansion Utility Relocation Project for Barrie GO line. Starting on October 7, Metrolinx will be taking the overhead utility lines and transferring them underground. Preliminary work for this project is expected to start on September 25.
This phase of work will take approximately 4 to 6 weeks to complete and general working hours are Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. This work will only take place on weekdays and any excavation sites will be covered and securely fenced off from the public.
The Town will be working with Metrolinx to help limit interruptions to the community. Please see below for a summary of the disruptions:
- Temporary lane closures on Timothy Street starting on September 30. Signage and detour routes will be available. Connections to/from the Tom Taylor Trail and AOK playground and parking lot will remain open during construction works.
- There will be no lane closures on weekends.
- The Newmarket Farmers' Market will continue as scheduled on Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Riverwalk Commons.
- Sidewalk closure from 534 Timothy Street to just past Doug Duncan Drive starting on October 7.
- 40 parking spaces along the east side of Doug Duncan Drive (south of Timothy Street) will be required for this work from October 7 – mid November.
Please see the map of the affected area for more information.
The Town submitted requests to Metrolinx to schedule this work during shoulder seasons to reduce road and parking closures as much as possible and to minimize the impact on the area and community events that happen downtown.
To learn more about this phase of work, please see Metrolinx's construction notice.
