  • Public Information Centre: Animal Control & Licensing

    Thursday, January 23, 2020 6:30:00 PM - Thursday, January 23, 2020 8:30:00 PM
Location: Municipal Offices - Council Chambers (395 Mulock Drive)
    Category: Public Input Opportunity
The Town of Newmarket is exploring changes to its current animal control by-law and the introduction of licensing pet stores and wants to hear from residents and stakeholders. On January 1, 2020 the Provincial Animal Welfare services (PAWS) Act came into force, creating the first fully provincial government-based animal welfare enforcement system in Canada. The introduction of a pet store licensing regime would establish rules and regulations surrounding the sale of pets, the ethical sourcing of pets for sale and how retailers can treat the animals they sell (if permitted). Get involved and have your say at a Public Information Centre (PIC). At the drop-in event, you can visit booths to speak with staff and community partners about our current animal services program; proposed changes, including tethering of animals; our DocuPet annual licensing process; animal shelter and wildlife services; Provincial changes regarding animal welfare and protection; best practices in other municipalities; role of York Regional Police in animal welfare. Attend in-person to share your feedback to help inform future regulations. An online survey will be available at Newmarket.ca/news following the event, running until by February 9, 2020.
