  • Newmarket names Frank Williams Park after local farming family and resident

    Created: Wednesday, August 25, 2021

On August 25, 2021, the Town of Newmarket hosted a park naming ceremony for Frank Williams Park. Mayor and Members of Council, along with members of the Williams family were in attendance for this event while adhering to all Public Health and Safety guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the November 16, 2020 Council Meeting, a recommendation was made to rename the park located at Poppy Lane and Wilbur Pipher Circle to honour Mr. Frank Williams. Mr. Williams was born on the farmland located North of St. John's Sideroad, on the East side of Leslie Street (currently, the Copper Hills development). His family worked the land for more than 90 years. Throughout his life, Mr. Williams spent years dedicated to public service.

For Whitchurch-Stouffville, Mr. Williams served as a Councillor, Deputy Reeve and Reeve. He also represented Whitchurch-Stouffville at County Council. Serving Newmarket and the surrounding areas, he sat on the board of directors for the Newmarket District Farmer's Co-Op and also on the S.S. 3 Public School Board.

The park located at Poppy Lane and Wilbur Pipher Circle was never formally named and renaming this park to honour Mr. Frank Williams on his former family land is a fitting tribute given his years of local public service.
