Newmarket opens temporary cooling facility for August 9 and 10
The Town of Newmarket will be opening a temporary cooling facility, located in the Magna Centre (800 Mulock Drive) east entrance lobby to assist those who need to escape the heat on August 9 and 10. The cooling station will remain open as long as the York Region Heat Warning is in effect. The hours of operation are 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please note that the rest of the building will not be open to the public.
Residents who are using the cooling station must follow public health guidelines by practicing proper hand hygiene and staying at least 6ft./2m. away from others using the facility (physical distancing).
Residents will be screened by staff when they arrive and asked to sanitize their hands and wear a mask / face covering before entering. Disposable masks will be provided for those who do not have their own.
Residents who wish to use the cooling station are also asked to self-assess their health before arriving at the cooling station. Those who have any of the symptoms of COVID-19 (noted below) are asked to refrain from entering the building and to seek assessment and testing as early as possible at Newmarket's COVID-19 Assessment Centre at Southlake Regional Health Centre (596 Davis Drive). It is also important for the resident and any close contacts to self-isolate for 14 days.
Symptoms can include but are not limited to:
- Fever (temperature of 37.8 or greater)
- New or worsening cough
- Shortness of breath
Other symptoms can include:
- Sore throat or difficulty swallowing
- New smell or taste disorder(s)
- Nausea / vomiting, diarrhea or abdominal pain
- Runny nose, or nasal congestion (unrelated to seasonal allergies, post nasal drip etc.)
