Province announces lockdown for York Region, including Newmarket
Today, the Province of Ontario announced that York Region, including the Town of Newmarket, will be entering the 'lockdown' (grey zone) of the Province's COVID-19 Response Framework. In response to this announcement, all Town of Newmarket buildings, facilities and in-person programs will be closed/cancelled as of Monday, December 14 for a minimum of 28 days, with the exception of the Newmarket Public Library. All virtual programming will proceed as scheduled.
"This is going to be another very difficult time for our community and particularly for our local businesses who have had an incredibly tough and unpredictable year," says Newmarket Mayor John Taylor. "Please everyone, let's continue to come together and do our part by staying vigilant with physically distancing, wearing masks, handwashing and doing whatever we can to demonstrate our unwavering support for our businesses through this unprecedented holiday season."
These measures have been taken in line with the Province of Ontario's direction to protect public health and safety by trying to limit the transmission of COVID-19. Toronto and Peel Region also remain in the lockdown zone
During the lockdown zone, indoor organized public events and social gatherings are not permitted, except with members of the same household. Outdoor organized public events or social gatherings are limited to a maximum of 10 people.
With outdoor activities permitted as part of the grey zone, outdoor skating at Riverwalk Commons will continue to reopen tonight at 5 p.m. as scheduled, with strict health and safety measures and capacity limits in place. Participants are required to pre-book their skate time in advance, learn more at newmarket.ca/riverwalkcommons
The Newmarket Public Library is also permitted to remain open under the Province's framework. 10 visitors will be allowed to enter at a time and stay for a maximum of 30 minutes per day with strict health and safety measures in place. Learn more at newmarketpl.ca
Newmarket trails, parks and playgrounds will remain open and residents are encouraged to use them while following all health and safety measures as outlined by the province.
While in lockdown, indoor and outdoor dining is prohibited, while take-out and delivery options are permitted. Retail is generally permitted to be open for curbside pick-up or delivery only, with some exceptions. The Town strongly urges the community to continue to shop local and support local businesses through curbside pick-up, online shopping, take-out and delivery options and by purchasing gift cards when possible. Other essential services provided by the Town that will continue to operate include, but are not limited to water and wastewater services, waste and recycling pick-up, general maintenance of Town-maintained roads, sidewalks and trails, Central York Fire Services (emergency services) and more.
Residents are reminded to wear a face mask or covering when in enclosed public spaces or when physical distancing of at least 6ft./2m. is not possible and wash your hands frequently to stop the transmission of COVID-19.
