3 ways to take care of your mental health in your commmunity
Navigating difficult conversations like mental health has always been challenging, but now more than ever it’s important that we not only have those conversations but make space in our lives to take care of our mental health. Early in the pandemic, Mayor John Taylor spoke of the importance of the ‘Collective Wellbeing of the community’ and that’s been a topic that has been top of mind for many right here in Newmarket.
There are countless ways to take care of your mental well-being that we are all familiar with, sleep well, eat a balanced diet, meditate, do yoga, speak to someone when you need help, and more. There are also a few ways that you can take care of your mental health and connect with your community at the same time:
- Go outside for a walk on one of the York Regional Trails - York Region’s extensive network of trails and forests are among the Region’s most cherished attractions. Born of ancient routes used by First Nations, the trail network now extends throughout each of the nine cities and towns. Trail explorers can choose between paved urban trails or rugged forest paths. Hikers will be amazed at the diverse landscape, wildlife, and vegetation waiting to be appreciated. Explore the Oak Ridges Moraine Trail, kettle lakes, wetlands, forests, and a variety of other points of interest. Get out and enjoy nature and fresh air!
- Connect with a friend online - While often it can be beneficial to give yourself a break from screen time it’s also important to learn how to use social media and the connection our phones and computers give us to have meaningful experiences. Avoid mindless scrolling, instead reach out and have a conversation with someone, maybe get a few friends together for a virtual trivia night. This not only makes you feel more connected as an individual, but it also helps the people you reach out to as well for improved collective wellbeing. Check out our Recreation and Culture Hub, Home Sweet Home, to access a variety of wellness resources and fun activity ideas to stay healthy and connected with loved ones.
- Help a friend/neighbour or support a small business - While we may not be able to see friends in person we can reach out in many ways. The previous point mentioned connecting virtually but there is also an opportunity for gestures of kindness and that can include dropping off care packages for friends and loved ones, porch drop-offs of food, and other goods. You can also reach out to your favourite small businesses to see how you can support them during this time. Science proves that helping others makes you feel good, so what better time than during a global pandemic to help your community and yourself!
