Tom Vegh was first elected to Newmarket Council in 2000. After implementation of the ward system in 2003, he was re-elected to represent Ward 1 in 2006, 2010, and 2014.
As Ward 1 Councillor, Tom sits on a number of committees. Councillor Vegh is Chair of the Town/Library Task Force and the Site Plan Review Committee. He is Vice-Chair of the Newmarket Library and the senior council representative on the Inclusivity Advisory Committee. Tom also sits on ad hoc committees and task forces and was the first Chair of the SmartNewmarket Task Force.
Raised in Newmarket, Tom brings a wealth of business experience to Council. He has over 20 years' experience at the executive level in the non-profit sector and career transition industry and has represented these industries on two provincial boards. He recently served as the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity York Region and on the Executive team for Habitat for Humanity GTA. Presently he is the Executive Director of Inn From The Cold here in Newmarket.
Councillor Tom Vegh is a strong advocate for his constituents. His priorities are to ensure residents receive value for their tax dollars, that growth is managed so that all can enjoy a high quality of life, that essential services are available and delivered in a timely and efficient manner, and that neighbourhoods remain vibrant and safe. He is a strong supporter of economic growth in Newmarket and its continued prosperity.
Councillor Vegh holds regular Community Drop-ins where he meets with constituents about their issues and concerns. The Community Drop-in occurs the first Tuesday of every month (except August and September) from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Magna Centre, Main Level. In addition to the drop-ins, he is always accessible and available to listen and meet with constituents.
Tom earned an Honours B.A. from York University and graduated from Huron Heights Secondary School. He has been a resident of Ward 1 since 1997, where with his wife Angela, is raising their two children.
