Physical/ Design Value

371 Davis Drive is a representative example of GothicRevival architectural style. The one-and-a-half storeybuilding follows a L-shaped plan, with overhanging eaves, cross gable roof which showcases a small, steeply pitchedgable peak, and a larger front gable peak, both of whichhave elaborately decorated bargeboard that includesgingerbread trim and finials which are key characteristics ofGothic Revival architecture. The rhythmic and balancedplacement of the rectangular window openings, the one-storeycanted bay window and the rectangular one-storey bay windows are common design elements associatedwith Gothic Revival buildings. The asymmetrical but balancedfacade has a central rectangular entryway opening andclassically inspired front porch with a pedimented lean-to roofsupported by an architrave and wood columns sitting on stonepiers which are all additional features associated with theGothic Revival style.

The lots lines, layout, and built form of the historicvillage of Newmarket was well established in the mid-19thcentury and evident in a well-established commercial corefound along Main Street South and the large presence ofresidences located along several side streets. Similarly, therhythmical lot lines and layout of the section of Davis Drivesurrounding the subject property were also established by themid-19th century. 371 Davis Drive is a visual remnant of thegrowth and prosperity in the Village of Newmarket during the19th century.

Although 371 Davis Drive is located at the edge of the historicvillage increased development along this important arterialroad continued into the 20th century. The presence of buildingswhich lined the north and south side of the street were in placeby 1929 and reflect the growth and prosperity of the villageof Newmarket. Many of these residences in the village ofNewmarket, were owned by local merchants who ownedand/or worked within the commercial core, including merchantJames Kelman who lived at 371 Davis Drive in 1884. Withinthe larger context, 371 David Drive is legible as a historicbuilding and exhibits setback, massing, style, and decorativedetails consistent with the character of the historic Village ofNewmarket.
