As part of the Town of Newmarket’s Road Safety Program, the Town will be installing pavement markings on various streets throughout Newmarket beginning in mid-August and continuing through the end of August (weather permitting) in time for back to school to increase safety for the community.
The work includes but is not limited to the installation of urban shoulders, painted medians, centrelines, ladder crosswalk markings, and “Slow Down” pavement stencils.
The following work will be undertaken in the evening or overnight, when traffic is lighter:
- Kingsmere Avenue (Nellie Little Crescent to Stonehaven Avenue) - Urban Shoulders / New Centreline
- Shadrach Drive (From approx. 25 m north of Brookstone Place to approx. 65 m south of Kinrara Court) - New Centreline
- Stonehaven Avenue (Dilman Avenue to Foxcroft Blvd) - Urban Shoulders
- Gorham Street (Court Street to Maple Street) - Urban Shoulders / “Slow Down” Stencils
- Srigley Street (Alexander Road to Carlson Drive) - “Slow Down” Stencils
- Patterson Street (Beman Drive to Elgin Street) - Urban Shoulders / “Slow Down” Stencils
- Wayne Drive (Waratah Avenue to Leslie Street) - Urban Shoulders / New Centreline / “Slow Down” Stencils
- Bristol Road (Vanden Bergh Boulevard to Main Street N) – Painted Median (Vanden Bergh Boulevard to Chester Avenue) / Urban Shoulders / “Slow Down” Stencils
- Burford Street (London Road to Bristol Road) - Urban Shoulders / New Centreline
- Longford Drive (Harrison Drive to Willow Lane) - Urban Shoulders
- Queen Street (Millard Avenue to Parkside Drive) - Urban Shoulders / “Slow Down” Stencils
- Timothy Street (Cedar Street to Doug Duncan Drive) - New Centre line / Ladder Crosswalk Markings
- William Roe Boulevard (Dixon Boulevard to Currey Crescent) - Urban Shoulders / “Slow Down” Stencils
- Carruthers Avenue (Keith Avenue to Clearmeadow Boulevard) - Urban Shoulders
- Clearmeadow Boulevard (Bathurst Street to Flanagan Court) - Urban Shoulders
- Woodspring Avenue (Bonshaw Avenue to Flagstone Way) - "Slow Down" Stencils
- Woodspring Avenue (Ford Wilson Boulevard to Memorial Gardens Way) – New Painted Median / Buffered Zones adjacent to existing bike lanes
Why is this work being done?
New centrelines and ladder crosswalk markings are important road safety features that help guide motorists and pedestrians through intersections, improve lane discipline, and enhance visibility.
Urban shoulders and painted medians are traffic-calming measures that visually narrow the roadway, encouraging drivers to reduce their speed and help create safer streets for all road users.
Existing parking bylaws will remain unchanged, and on-street parking will continue to be permitted in accordance with the Town's parking bylaws.
“Slow Down” pavement stencils serve as a visual reminder to drivers to reduce their speed and be more aware of their surroundings.
Funding
The listed locations, excluding Carruthers Avenue, Timothy Street, and Shadrach Drive, are funded by the Province of Ontario’s Road Safety Initiatives Fund (RSIF) program.
Impact to residents
Contractors may ask residents near the work area to move their vehicle(s) from the roadway to allow the work to proceed. Please also note that the Town cannot be held responsible for damage to any privately owned items, such as vehicles and trailers, that are located on Town property, within the right-of-way, or on the street.
As with all construction work, residents may notice some dust and noise associated with this work. The Town will work with the contractor to limit disruptions as much as possible.
Parking reminder: After the line painting work is completed, any existing parking restrictions will remain the same, and on-street parking will continue to be permitted in accordance with the Town’s parking bylaws.
