Memorial programs

The Town of Newmarket believes that residents, businesses, and visitors to our Town should have the opportunity to leave a tangible and lasting legacy that commemorates these moments. These programs have been developed to commemorate a special occasion, remember a significant event, honour a loved one, or express a passion for enhancing the community. Immersed within our green spaces, these programs will not only commemorate a moment, but also enhance the park and community for everyone.

Veteran Memorial Walkway Program

The Veteran Memorial Walkway program was established to honour all veterans who fought or did peace keeping duties for the Allied Forces and returned home to Canada. The Veteran Memorial Walkway runs from D'Arcy Street to the Cenotaph. The stones on the walkway will be engraved with the veteran's name, rank, years served and regiment or divisions of the armed service. Stones are unveiled during an annual Remembrance Day Ceremonies.

$25 of the funds are being directed to the Legion Welfare Fund and $25 to the Veterans Association Welfare Fund.  All members of the Allied Forces are eligible.

To apply for a stone, or for more information on pricing, please complete an application form and return to the Town of Newmarket's Municipal Offices or Operations Centre. For more information, please contact the Town of Newmarket at 905-895-5193.

Celebration Tree Program

The Celebration Tree Program is a non-profit planting program offered by the Town of Newmarket. A tree symbolizes strength, durability, shelter, and beauty. Individuals may contribute towards the greening of our beautiful parks, in celebration of a loved one or in dedication of a special event.

Trees in the program are 60mm caliper trees suitable to grow in our areas. Trees that are selected will be planted and maintained by the Town of Newmarket. Tree locations will also be selected by the Town of Newmarket to assure the area is the most appropriate for the tree type and in accordance with general planting scheme for the park. After the selection and approval is made, and payment in full has been received, the planting of the tree will take place. Planting is available in the spring (May to June) and in the fall (September to November). Upon completion of the planting, the Town of Newmarket will notify you.

*Please note, the following locations are sold out: Fairy Lake Park between Water Street to Mulock Drive, Newmarket Riverwalk Commons and Main Street.

Celebration Bench

The Celebration Bench Program provides a special way for residents to celebrate important life events, honour loved ones, or mark milestones with a lasting tribute in one of our town's beautiful parks. Whether you're celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or any other special occasion, dedicating a bench with a custom plaque offers a meaningful way to remember and share those moments with the community.

Each bench will be dedicated for a period of 10 years, with a personalized plaque to commemorate your chosen occasion or honoree. These benches not only serve as a tribute but also enhance our public spaces, offering peaceful spots for reflection and enjoyment by all who visit.

Benches are available for purchase in the following Newmarket Parks. Custom locations are not permitted as part of this program. There are a limited number of benches available for purchase each year and are provided on a first come, first serve basis. Benches along the Tom Taylor Trail and Fairy Lake park are not available.

Let your words be carried with the wind...

The Town of Newmarket partnered with Oasis – Centre for Bereavement and Healing to install a Wind Phone along the Tom Taylor Trail to help those in the community who are grieving. The Wind Phone is located along the Tom Taylor Trail between Andrew Street and William Street.

The Wind Phone is a symbol of remembrance and respect for those who have passed away. It helps promote a sense of community bonding and encourages open dialogue about grief and loss.
