Frederick Hagan (1918–2003) remains one of Canada’s most vital yet distinct voices in graphic arts, a master lithographer who served as the Head of Printmaking at the Ontario College of Art (now OCAD University) for nearly three decades. Hagan approached art through a lens of profound empathy for human labour, existential struggle, and social observation.
Ladders features 13 lithographs by Frederick Hagan that explore human consciousness and vulnerability through social, existential, and personal symbolism. Like much of Hagan’s work, these prints are deeply autobiographical. Informed by his background in carpentry, ladders serve as central symbols of creation and shifting states of mind. Throughout the series, they invite viewers to consider human connection and empathy as pathways to personal revelation.
