Town of Newmarket meets the highest standard for drinking water inspection for the sixth consecutive year

In celebration of Water and Waste Water and Stormwater Operators Appreciation Day on October 23, the Town of Newmarket is pleased to announce that it has received another perfect drinking water inspection score for the sixth consecutive year from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP).

“Congratulations to the Water and Waste Water Services unit for this incredible achievement that reflects the dedication and expertise of our Water and Waste Water staff.” says Mayor John Taylor. “These dedicated professionals work around the clock, in every season and all-weather conditions, to ensure our community has access to safe, high-quality drinking water while treating and managing wastewater and stormwater systems that help protect our environment. Earning a perfect inspection score for six consecutive years is an extraordinary milestone, and meets the high standards set out by the province for all municipalities. I am incredibly proud of the team for demonstrating such care for our community.”

Newmarket's water quality is mandated through the Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002 (SDWA). Newmarket has created an operational plan to meet the legislative requirements set out through the Safe Drinking Water Act, 2022.  It sets out a framework to develop a Quality Management System (QMS) that is specific and relevant to the Town’s drinking water system.

The annual MECP inspection evaluates municipal drinking water systems to ensure they meet all legislative and regulatory requirements under the Safe Drinking Water Act. A score of 100 per cent is the highest rating awarded and reflects full compliance with all applicable requirements. The inspection also confirms that Newmarket continues to meet rigorous standards for maintaining and operating its drinking water system.

In addition to meeting provincial and environmental requirements and routine water testing, the Town also conducts water maintenance programs such as watermain flushing and swabbing and maintains water meters, fire hydrants and conduct water main repairs. They are also responsible for managing water, wastewater and stormwater infrastructure to protect the environment and prevent flooding.
