Newmarket is snow ready!

Type
News & Notice

Newmarket is always snow ready and will respond to the inclement weather. Staff have been monitoring the weather and road/sidewalk conditions and will deploy snow crews in preparation for inclement weather.

See below to learn more about the Town's snow procedures:

  1. First snow response is to salt the roads and this takes four to five hours to complete. Salting trucks are dispatched before any precipitation has occurred to combat inclement weather conditions such as freezing rain and ice. Salting material may be re-applied to ensure the safety of our community. Salting the road prior to plowing helps provide a brine to assist with breaking the bond between the snow and the pavement.
  2. Once snow accumulation is over 6cm, Newmarket snow plowing operations will begin, starting with primary routes (routes more travelled or lead to and from schools or hospitals) followed by secondary routes.
  3. Newmarket maintains approximately 624km of roadway (both sides of the roadway) and approximately 312km of sidewalks.
  4. Newmarket also has approximately 250 Courts in Town that require a special plow to clear, and therefore it may take longer for crews to reach courts.
  5. It takes approximately 16 hours to plow/clear the Town and even longer during a significant weather event, or if snow continues to fall.

Reminders:

  • Brown mailboxes (usually in newer subdivisions) are cleared by Canada Post
  • Bus shelters and stops are the responsibility of York Region Transit
  • Do not push snow into the streets or sidewalks
  • Do not put waste and recycling bins on the street or sidewalk
  • Avoid parking your cars on the street as this interferes with snow plowing operations
  • Please report damages to info@newmarket.ca
  • Please respect our snow operators

Missed Street?

Newmarket makes every attempt to not miss any streets or sidewalks in Town. If residents believe their area has been missed, they can submit a service request through an online form at newmarket.ca/snowremoval - service requests will be accepted 16 hours after the snow has stopped falling.
