Beginning next week, Metrolinx will continue their ongoing utility relocation work downtown near Timothy Street and Doug Duncan Drive as part of the GO Train Expansion Utility Relocation Project for Barrie GO line. Metrolinx will continue to take the overhead utility lines and transferthem underground.
This phase of work will be ongoing until the end of March. General working hours are Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. This work will only take place on weekdays.
The Town will be working closely with Metrolinx to help limit interruptions to the community as much as possible. Please see below for highlights of what can be expected:
- During the working times, there will be a temporary single lane closure on the north side of Timothy Street.
- Flagmen and paid duty YRP Officers will be in place to direct vehicular commuter traffic. The Tom Taylor Trail will remain open for pedestrians, minor delays may occur.
- Parking spots on the east side of Doug Duncan Drive will be temporarily unavailable during construction. Pedestrian access will be permitted on the opposite side of the street on Timothy and Doug Duncan. Please see this downtown parking map for alternative parking locations [PDF/843KB].
- Nearby businesses and homes may hear machinery such as excavators and dump trucks, but there should be no impact to the hydro power during the working times.
The Town submitted requests to Metrolinx to schedule this work during shoulder season, to reduce road and parking closures as much as possible and to minimize the impact on the area and community events in the downtown.
