June is a month of community, culture, events and celebrations in Newmarket

The Town of Newmarket is recognizing all the ways that we can embrace individuality, celebrate culture and encourage movement in June. Throughout the month, the Town is offering many activities and in-person events to honour unique Indigenous histories, recognize the contributions of seniors and continue to build a community that is inclusive and accessible for everyone.

“June’s full calendar of events reminds us of all the ways Newmarket is so vibrant and welcoming,” says Mayor John Taylor. “Together, we continue to create one of the best places to live in Canada where there are endless ways to connect with your community.”

National Indigenous History Month

To honour both National Indigenous History Month and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation in September, the Town’s annual temporary installation of painted feathers will return to the bridge along the Tom Taylor Trail near the Municipal Offices. In many Indigenous cultures, feathers hold deep significance and can represent honour, strength, wisdom, trust, and connection. As visitors cross the bridge, the orange feathers encourage reflection on the harmful legacy of residential schools, honour the children who never returned home, recognize Survivors and their families, and acknowledge the ongoing impacts of intergenerational trauma experienced by Indigenous communities. The installation serves as both a space for reflection and a reminder of our shared responsibility to continue learning, listening, and advancing reconciliation.
