Speed Management

The Town of Newmarket is committed to making traffic and road safety a priority. Newmarket works closely with other community partners to keep our roads safe and implement traffic control measures to increase safety, ensure parking and traffic regulations are followed and decrease congestion on Newmarket roads.

Urban shoulder

An Urban shoulder is a space that consists of a white line painted anywhere from 1.0 to 2.5 metres away from a curb to create a visual “road diet”. This urban shoulder is not an alternative to a dedicated cycling facility, but a traffic-calming measure to slow down vehicular traffic on the road.

Urban Shoulder does not affect the existing parking restrictions and on-street parking. All parking restrictions remain as they were before the installation of Urban Shoulders, and any on-street parking that was previously allowed continues to be permitted after the lines are painted.

The Urban Shoulder Program was introduced in 2022 as part of the Town of Newmarket’s Speed Management Pilot Program, and it is expanding every year. The existing Urban Shoulder locations are available on the Traffic Calming Map.

Community Safety Cameras not active

The Ontario Government has passed Bill 56 which ended the use of Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras across the province on November 14, 2025.

Tickets issued on or before November 13, 2025, are still valid. Anyone who has received a ticket with an issue date on or before November 13 should pay or appeal it by the date shown on the ticket. Tickets may be received after November 14 due to processing times, however it is still the responsibility of the vehicle owner to pay or appeal their ticket by date shown on the ticket.

The Province has also mandated new roadside measures such as larger signage to be installed in and around areas where speed cameras were previously operational.

The Town of Newmarket remains dedicated to promoting road safety for all residents and visitors and will follow all provincial requirements. The Town will continue to support other ongoing traffic safety initiatives.
